The University of Freiburg has notched up an important success in its quest to receive approval for Clusters of Excellence, international beacons of research, in the ongoing Excellence competition. The University has been invited to submit two full proposals in the “Clusters of Excellence” funding line: “Our outstanding researchers prevailed with their successful draft proposals, allowing us to mark an important milestone in this competition. The Excellence funding we have received in the past ten years and our broad basis in collaborative research have paid off. Two of our new proposals met with approval. We are proud that we now have the chance to further consolidate our strengths in the area of biological signaling research (BIOSS) with CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies and with a further internationally competitive research priority in materials research – Living, Adaptive, and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS) – in the second round of the competition for Clusters of Excellence. We will do our utmost to achieve success with our cluster proposals in the further course of the competition,” says Rector Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer.

Now begins the critical phase of the competition: The cluster initiatives are called upon to submit their full proposals by 21 February 2018. The decision as to which of them will ultimately be selected for funding is scheduled for 27 September 2018. The funding period for the new Clusters of Excellence is set to begin on 1 January 2019.

CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies

CIBBS expands on the work performed at the Cluster of Excellence BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies, which has been receiving funding since 2007. The cluster initiative will develop strategies for precisely controlling biological signaling processes, making it possible to translate findings from fundamental research into concrete innovations.

Living, Adaptive, and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS)

This cluster initiative has set itself the goal of developing bioinspired materials systems capable of adapting to a wide range of environments and supplying themselves with clean energy. It is supported by the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT) and the Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF) at the University as well as the Sustainability Center Freiburg, founded in cooperation with Freiburg’s five Fraunhofer institutes.
