Spokesperson: Prof. Dr. Ralf Baumeister, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Driever

The Major Genetics and Developmental Biology provides training in genetics and molecular biology as basis to understand growth, differentiation and regeneration as well as cancer in biomedically relevant model organisms. During the first year, two integrated modules focus on general and human genetics, genomics and epigenetics, as well as regulation, signaling and developmental mechanisms. Technical training includes molecular and cellular biology, imaging techniques, computational biology and systems biology. The second semester offers a choice of modules on different developmental biology topics as well as genetic and cellular disease mechanisms. In the second year students elect on focus area: (1) Molecular Mechanisms of Development: stem cell biology, pattern formation, cell communication, transcriptional networks, morphogenesis, organogenesis and regeneration biology. (2) Neural development and related disease mechanisms. (3) molecular genetics and cell biology of stress, cellular aging and degeneration. Basic research as well as applied and biomedically oriented laboratories offer opportunities for Master theses.
