All majors offer their students an in-depth and research-oriented training program with a high practical component and close integration with current research projects of the participating research groups. Small learning groups, excellent supervision, close contact with the lecturers and professors, many elective options and the use of modern teaching methods are the hallmarks of the program.

In the first semester, students take orientation modules in three areas of their choice before deciding on an area of specialization for the remainder of their Masters.
This promotes an interdisciplinary approach, which is highly valued by future employers. It also gives all students, including those who did not complete their undergraduate degree in Freiburg, the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the teaching culture and the various research areas before specializing in a particular field.

In the second year of the M.Sc. program, students spend a lot of time in the research laboratories of the lecturers involved in the program, benefiting from the excellent research landscape in the biosciences in Freiburg with the clusters of excellence BIOSS — Centre for Biological Signalling Studies, BLBT — Brain Links – Brain Tools und CIBSS — Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies und livMatS — Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems, several Collaborative Research Centern and Graduate Schools. The close integration of the Faculty of Biology with the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics offers an extended range of opportunities for internships and final theses.
