Trinational Specialization Biotechnology

A trinational course of studies

The trinational specialization Biotechnology is offered by the upper rhine universities Freiburg, Basel and Straßburg. Students from France, Switzerland and Germany obtain and interdisciplinary, trilingual training in the field of biotechnology.

Curriculum

A large part of the lectures takes place in Strasburg, at the École Supérieure de Biotechnologie de Strasbourg (ESBS). Block courses and practicals in Basel, Freiburg and Karlsruhe are added. The languages of instruction and examination are frensh, german and english. Usually, the language of instruction is the native language of the instructor. The bilingual exams that take place according to frensh model at the end of each semester and can be written in each of the languages given.

Success in three years

The course of studies bases on a concluded Bachelor of Science (preferrably in a subject relevant for biology) and results in an M.Sc. within 6 semesters. It starts in winter semester with intensive language courses in frensh, german and english.

Each of the three partner universities takes over a part of the training corresponding to its focus of reseach. Thereby, the result is a wide research oriented study program. From molecular biology up to bioinformatics all aspects of biotechnology are covered. Lectures in patent law, economy and scientific language courses round up the training. In the third year of studies students can individually specialize selecting a field of specialization (eg bioproduction of synthetic biology).

International opportunities

The Master of Science - in french "Diplome d'Ingénieur en Biotechnologie" - is recognized in the three countries involved. Also internationally it facilitates a very rapid entry into labor or a doctorate. ESBS graduates find interesting professional fields all over the world, eg in research and development, management, quality assurance and education.

The alumni network currently comprises 400 graduate who regularly inform and become informed about news and job offers >> www.esbsalumni.net.

Strengthen team spirit

The manageable number of around 40 students per year ensure an individual care through the instructors so that the given duration of studies of six semesters is usually kept. Moreover, the private atmosphere fosters the development of personal attributes such as communication and team skills, sense of responsibility and social competence. Furthermore, the permanend contact between different nationalities and an uncomplicated handling with the languages leads to an open minded attitude with respect to new and unfamiliar things so that ESBS graduates are active worldwide.

Making industry contacts

Througout the studies it comes to various opportunities to make contacts to potential employers. Biotechnological companies participate in the supervising board of the ESBS and contribute to the structuring of the curriculum.
Practicals have hich relevance in this course of studies. Besides the lab practicals complementing the lectures external practicals are firmly integrated in the curriculum. The course of studies is concluded by a master thesis of eight months the students choose in an academic or industrial research laboratory all over the world.

The ESBS and the other participating universities seek to support students financially via the EU and other institutions. Accomodation is possible privately or in dormitories and th ESBS can give support in flat hunting.

Application & Admission

Decisive on the admission are the application documents and the interview at the university of Freiburg. Students having passed the fundamental studies of a first degree in a biological subject are eligible to apply: at least 4 semesters of study or 120 ECTS points. Applicants from natural sciences or engineering are considered.

Application documents

  • Application form
  • Curriculum vitae or résumé and short letter of motivation
  • Confirmation of enrollment
  • Copies of high school degree, semesterexams, pre-diploma or proof of forthcoming conclusion of the fundamental studies or acquired ECTS points.

Applications are to be submitted to:

Application deadline is June 30 each year.

Qualified applicants are invited to a short interview in June or July.
