Abstract:
The implementation of new fabrication methods capable of generating multifunctional materials in green and cost-effective fashion is highdemand, particularly, those based on plant fibers for future applications in smart-textiles wearable technologies (e-textiles). Current fabrication methods of smart textiles are based (and limited to) on surface coatings and/or chemical functionalization of plant-derived fibers. However, these functionalized fibers suffer from wearing deterioration (e.g. bending, stretching, washing) and hindering its longterm use.
Here I will present a new approach for the biological fabrication of the next generation of smart functional textiles, how we explored the cotton’s complex biological machinery (e.g. biosynthetic pathways) and combined it with chemistry and material sciences to tailor the endfunctionality of the cellulosic fibers – as for example, the incorporation single molecular magnets (SMM) into cotton fibers.
