Overview of current appointment procedures conducted at the Faculty of Biology

Professorship
Full Professorship (W3) for for Integrative Signalling Research

We are looking for candidates with a competitive and internationally visible research program for the development and application of innovative methods of chemical biology in the field of biological signalling research. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who develop molecules and methods for the modulation as well as analysis of signalling pathways in animal cells and/ or organoids. These technologies should also have the potential for therapeutic applications. A close connection to the Cluster of Excellence "Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies" (CIBSS) and the Centre for Biological Signalling Studies (BIOSS) is expected. It is desirable that the professorship further contributes to existing collaborative research programs (e.g. CRC 1381) and actively participates in new initiatives. This professorship represents an important interface for interdisciplinary research and offers the opportunity to integrate into a broad local cooperation network. Further information about the faculty's research profile and the academic environment can be found on the faculty's homepage www.bio.uni-freiburg.de.

The professorship is supposed to contribute to teaching in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. Biology programs in Chemical, Synthetic and Translational Biology.

Prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system, are expected.

We are particularly pleased to receive applications from women for the position advertised here.

The following application documents are to be submitted:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Certificates of degrees and academic qualifications
  • Complete list of papers and invitede lectures specifying the ten most important publications
  • Link to a curated ORCID or Google Scholar profile
  • A short (3 pages) overview on the current and planned research program
  • A list of current and previous research projects including the financial support received
  • A list of current and previous teaching activities

Please send your application including supporting documents mentioned above and the application form citing the reference number 04092, by 28.02.2025 at the latest.

Further information on the appointment procedure can be found in the Code for Practice for professorial appointments.

Professorship
Full Professorship (W3) for Synthetic Biology

The future holder of the position should have an internationally recognized program in developing innovative synthetic biology methods to study and/or steer signalling pathways in eukaryotic cells or novel cell-based or protein-based technologies. Methods of interest include, but not exclusively, gene expression control systems, construction and mathematical modelling of gene or protein circuits, optogenetics, protein engineering (especially AI-based), directed evolution, precise genome editing, targeting and delivery of bioactive compounds. We particularly encourage applications from candidates developing methods to control signalling cascades in cells, animals and/or organoids, that engineer membraneless organelles, riboswitches, protein switches or DNA-based molecular tools. The technologies should have the potential to be applied by signalling researchers and could be directed towards creating novel solutions for precision medicine. The successful candidate will become member of the „Centre for Biological Signalling Studies“ (BIOSS) and of the Excellence Cluster “Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies“ (CIBSS). Collaboration with the research centers, clusters and collaborative research centers established in Freiburg are welcome. Further information on the research profile of the faculty and the scientific environment can be found on the faculty's homepage www.bio.uni-freiburg.de. Participation in teaching B.Sc. and M.Sc. Biology in Synthetic and Translational Biology, as well as in M.Ed. Biology is expected. The University of Freiburg is a leading research university with two excellence clusters (CIBSS and livMatS), several Collaborative Research Centers and strong doctoral programs. Freiburg is a highly competitive internationally renowned science city, and together with the Universität Basel (CH), the Universität Strasbourg (F), the Universität Haute-Alsace (F) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (D) – constitutes the „European Campus“.

Prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system, are expected.
