Abstract:

European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) are common tree species in Central European forests and of high ecologic as well as economic value. However, knowledge about the structure and function of the ecologically important fine root system of beech and ash and its impact on rhizosphere processes is scarce. Moreover, little is known about the direct intra- and interspecific belowground competition effects of these two species. In my talk I will present results about species-specific effects and competition effects on rhizosphere processes and fine root properties.
