What do you need to know about plants in the coming winter? Which winter-flowering plants can you plant to make your own garden more attractive? And which exotic plants from other climate zones can be found in Freiburg? Visitors to the University of Freiburg Botanical Gardens can find out the answers to this and many more questions during five Saturday walking tours. The lecture series begins on 20 October 2018, when Dr. Simon Poppinga presents autumn highlights in the Botanical Gardens. On 10 November 2018 Professor Dr. Arno Bogenrieder will talk about aspects of plants’ winter dormancy. Professor Dr. Hanns-Heinz Kassemeyerwill show off light-collecting plants and other clever desert plants on 15 December 2018. Nothart Rohde will take visitors through the greenhouse on 9 February 2019. And on the final tour Philipp Anweiler will demonstrate important matters in winter pruning trees on 2 March 2019.

The tours start on Saturdays at 2pm. Admission to the tour is three euros, which are spent on the gardens. Children under 16 and members of the Botanical Gardens’ friends association take part free. The meeting point is at the main entrance to the Botanical Gardens, Schänzlestraße 1, 79104 Freiburg. There is no need to register. The tours are organized by the Botanical Gardens and the association of friends of the gardens, “Freunde und Förderer des Botanischen Gartens der Universität Freiburg.”

On Friday 18 January 2019 at 6:30 pm there is also a lecture “Heilige Haine als Ersatz für Naturschutzgebiete? (Holy groves as an alternative to nature reserves?) Botanical impressions from Morroco” by Professor Dr. Ulrich Deil. He takes a look at holy places in Morocco which shelter valuable species, thereby serving in effect as nature reserves. The event will be held at the Institute of Biology I lecture hall (Zoology), Hauptstraße 1, first floor.
